Rewind to last month . . .
An unexpected, unnerving thing just happened: I realised I’ve become too comfortable (almost bored) and need to step out of my comfort zone.
You see, I used to be so focused and spontaneous. I had clear goals, finished projects efficiently, and loved making plans at the drop of a hat. It was beautiful living this way – it seemed to create a magical flow of synchronicity that followed me everywhere.
But, now the flow has slowed. I’ve become too comfortable and my motivational juju needs a re-boot.
Being a deep thinker, I’ve questioned how this could happen. Am I not following my passion? Do I fear success will make me more vulnerable? Is my inner child trying to protect me?
Wednesday night I hardly slept. My mind was like a patch work quilt – I tossed and turned trying to count sheep in an effort to relax. The sheep didn’t help, so I sat up and watched the moonlight through my window. In a trance-like state (maybe due to tiredness), I saw all my good, bad and indifferent thoughts bubbling to the surface and floating out the window into the ether. I did my best not to attach to any of these thoughts, just be an observer. Soon enough, my mind calmed and I fell asleep.
The next morning I woke up feeling a little tired, but with renewed clarity. I knew that if I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and re-connect with my flow, I needed to start with the small stuff. I decided to begin by attending a different yoga session that morning.
Off I went to my new yoga class, knowing I wouldn’t know anyone. The class was quite intimate and the teacher (brillant Ang) was able to come around individually and guess what…..encourage us out of our comfort zones.
She had me doing a Crows Pose and pushing up to Handstand, Lotusing my legs and pushing up into shoulder stand, and even flying Lizard, which had always eluded me. I felt so empowered for the rest of the day. My enthusiasm had come raging back and creativity was flowing.
Fast forward to today . . .
Yes! I love how this small decision to step out of my comfort zone empowered me. I know it was such a tiny change in my routine, but that’s all I needed to shake out the boredom and reconnect with my flow.
Sure, you might need to make more than 1 tiny change to feel renewed; but, know that every new decision you make brings you closer to the fresh, exciting possibilities that exist outside your comfort zone.
I know this isn’t always easy – sometimes it raises more questions than you expect. When I make decisions – big or small – I always ask, “Is it a Big YES?” And if it isn’t, it is definitely a no.
I also find that clarity always appears when you step outside of your comfort and start committing to the journey. Now don’t get confused – your destination, or goal, is not the journey itself.
If you focus on the destination you will likely hold back, stay in your comfort zone and miss life. Destinations are always in the distance. If you focus on the journey, you will feel freer to experience new things.
So instead of accepting boredom or wondering when you might arrive at your destination (or goal), focus all your energy into what makes you feel good, what enthuses you, what lights you up. That magical energy will help you step out of your comfort zone.
Go on, step out of your comfort zone and dare to be excited – for no reason at all!
